6. Where is Speak set?
Speak is set in Syracuse, New York, in the specific neighborhood
and school-Merryweather High School-of Melinda Sordino in the present day even
though the book was published in 1999. In the book everything takes place
mostly at Merryweather High School and Melinda’s house. I think the the story takes place in the ‘90’s
because it definitely feels like back in the day by the description of clothes
but not too long ago either.

I love your first question. I think that is a very important part in the book, it is one of the first times that we see Melinda speaking up for herself. That is the point where the book starts to get exciting instead of depressing.

I think Melinda telling Rachel about her getting raped really shows her true characteristic because she told Rachel so that Rachel would be aware of the purpose behind Andy Evans dating her. I think Rachel should have listened to the whole story instead of walking away.

The part where she says she writes about hairwomen in her journal was really funny. It was the few moments where I smiled in that part of the book.
